BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A teenage boy has been struck and killed while crossing a highway in southeastern Kentucky.

Kentucky State Police said 14-year-old Shane Curtis Smith of Gray died Thursday night when he was hit while trying to run across U.S. 25-E about two miles north of Barbourville.

Troopers said the incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. when the youth was struck by one car, thrown into the emergency lane by the impact and then hit again by a second driver who swerved to avoid the first collision.

The Knox County coroner pronounced Smith dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.
