BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- The Western Kentucky University Open Chess Tournament is expected to draw about 200 students and 75 adults during the three-day event that starts next Friday.
The tournament includes adult events as well as competition for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. And prizes are awarded in all events.
WKU MasterMind Scholarships are being awarded in the high school section to players in grades 9 to 12. The first-place overall winner in the high school section will receive a full tuition and fees scholarship to Western. Second place receives a $3,000 room and board scholarship, and third place receives a book scholarship.
Women's candidate master Claudia Munoz will give a presentation on Thursday, and chess grandmaster Vladimir Malakhov will have a presentation on Friday.
