Massive Amounts Of Car Break-ins

Car break-ins are on the rise, WBKO told you about several just a few weeks ago and since then more and more have been happening.

You may think it's common sense, to lock your car door, but for some people it's a mistake that's costing them.

"The biggest problem is, people are just walking off and leaving their vehicles unlocked," says Officer Ronnie Ward, with the Bowling Green Police Department.

Police have been trying to catch the culprits, but they don't think this is just one group of people.

"It's all over right now," says Ward, "it doesn't have any particular neighbor hood or any particular part of town."

Ward says these thieves are taking whatever they can get their hands on.

"They're just trying door handles and getting into cars and stealing people's stuff ... they're taking computers, phones, loose change, GPS systems anything that's not fastened directly to the car."

In some cases it's not just items inside the car it's the car itself.

The police do have several suspects, however none have been charged with these crimes.

Ward says there are several others they're looking for.

"It could be anybody at this point," says Ward.

And these crimes don't take very long to commit.

"They can be in and out of your car within seconds," he says.

Police say the best way to protect yourself is to lock it up.
