City Official Talks About Importance Of Social Media

Many people lost power last night after an electric transformer explosion in Bowling Green.

One city official kept people out of the dark, by using social media.

City Commissioner, Slim Nash spent the night updating his Facebook friends and Twitter followers with the latest information.

He says he was hesitant at first to use social media now, he feels like it's an obligation to keep the people of Bowling Green informed.

"One of the roles of my position as City Commissioner is to communicate to people what's happening in the city," says Nash, "Whether that's down at City Hall, or at the City Commission meeting ... or we've had a transformer catch fire and people have lost power."

Slim says social media is one of the quickest ways to reach a large amount of people at once.

"Never is it more apparent how important social media is than now," says Nash, "because you don't know why your lights go out. Sometimes your lights flicker, they stay off for a few minutes then come back on. In this case we had a major event, I was in the loop of information that was being shared concerning the event, and as I have done in the past, not just with this event and other large events I decided to share that information."

He says with his tweets and posts last night he gained 18 new friends on Facebook and about 30 new Twitter followers.
