An educational conference meant to promote African Americans in higher education is taking place in Bowling Green this week.
The Kentucky Association of Blacks in Higher Education (KABHE) is holding the event at the Holiday Inn until Tuesday.
The group is gathering to discuss ideas on how to get more African Americans to go to and graduate from college.
According to the organization, statewide, only 9 percent of students currently in college are African American.
"We're looking at issues of retention, we're looking at issues of equity, we're looking at how to address the issue of keeping our African American males in college and also supporting our African American females as they move along so we have opportunities to mentor and to network as well," says Marlisa Austin, the President of KABHE.
More than 185 people are attending this year's event, making it one of their biggest conferences ever.
