Tips for National Drinking Water Week

FRANKFORT, KY. (AP) -- It's National Drinking Water Week, and the Kentucky Division of Water says people should practice water conservation all year long.

The agency notes that some 97 percent of the earth's water is salty ocean water. Of the 3 percent that is fresh water, most is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. The division says that leaves only 1 percent for drinking.

The agency advises ways to save water inside the home include replacing old toilets with high-efficiency models, keep drinking water cooling in the refrigerator, turn off water while you brush your teeth and replace old showerheads with high-efficiency models.

Outside, you can mulch bushes and trees to retain moisture, use a broom rather than a hose to clean off driveways and sidewalks and plant native and drought-tolerant plants.
