Microchipped Cats

Cat lovers flocked to the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society Saturday to get their cats microchipped for free.

"I like it that way, it's much easier to find them, I don't have to lose my kitties," says Justin Roberts, who brought four cats to get microchipped.

Thanks to an 1800 dollar grant from Animal Rescue Corps, the shelter is able to offer the service to 300 cats.

They're also hoping to prevent accidents after a feline named Biscuit was mistakenly labeled as a stray and euthanized because of overcrowding.

The shelter says microchipping your pet is the best way to make sure it doesn't get lost.

"Cats unfortunately, a lot of times, will not keep on collars and tags, especially if they are outdoors and the other problem is, most owners don't come looking for their outdoor cat until sometimes it's too late so if they have a microchip, we start looking for that owner immediately," says Lorri Hare, the Executive Director of the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society.

Many of the cat owners say they brought their cats to the shelter in hopes of keeping them safe.

"I just think it's responsible pet ownership, you know if you're going to have animals, I think it's important to take care of them and make good decisions and having an animal microchipped so they can return home safely just sounded like a good decision," says Chris Chandler, who brought his cat to get microchipped.

Another man says he got a scare when his cat went missing from his apartment.

"I found him in the bushes, and I got lucky, so if that ever happens again, and I might not find him in the bushes, so there will be a good, a better chance that if he comes up missing, then I'll feel a lot safer knowing there is a great possibility he'll show up," Shathan McCoy, who brought his cat to get microchipped.

The shelter says they receive anywhere from 30 to 60 animals a day and that if these pets aren't microchipped, they will likely be euthanized.

They also say if you feed stray cats, you should have them spayed or neutered to prevent overpopulation.

The Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society microchipped 175 cats Saturday and therefore, will microchip another 125 Sunday.

Again, it is free and all you have do is show up between 12 and 3 p.m. with your cat in a pet carrier.

They are also showcasing more than 250 cats and dogs that are available for adoption.
