Glasgow Highland Games Kick off with Ceilidh

The Glasgow Highland Games are officially underway.

It's bag pipes, kilts, and plenty of music.

Which means one thing, it's the annual Ceilidh that takes place the night before the Games.

Karl Riley and his traditional sword have been making the trip from Owensboro for awhile.

"We've been coming here for about seven years, then we decided to buy kilts and become part of clan Donald," said Riley.

The Ceilidh is all types of music.

"We try to bring in the best performers we can from Scotland, Ireland, the United States, Canada, and they all gather here and do a little bit different thing. That's what a Ceilidh is, it's a smorgasbord of music," said Games Coordinator Bob Harrison.

"We have to work the clan Donald tent tomorrow, so we don't get a lot of opportunities to get around the music pavilions. So, this gives us a chance to see the bands prior to the games tomorrow and Sunday," said Riley.

The main goal of this is to preserve tradition.

"It's very important because it gives us an opportunity to know where our roots came from," said Harrison.

Tomorrow will be a full day at Barren River Lake State Resort Park with Scottish games including the famous Caber toss, haggis toss, hammer throw, and wrestling.

There will be plenty of Scottish and Irish food, clothing, souvenirs, and tradition.
