William Whitley Home Having Market Days Event

Posted: 10:48 AM Jul 9, 2012

STANFORD, Ky. (AP) -- The William Whitley House State Historic Site is celebrating the bicentennial of the War of 1812 with discounted tours of the central Kentucky home and a two-day event featuring local crafters and vendors.

The home near Stanford in Lincoln County is also known as Sportsman's Hill. It was the first brick home and circular racetrack built west of the Allegheny Mountains and was completed in 1794 by William Whitley and his wife, Esther. Early Kentuckians gathered at the home, including George Rogers Clark and Daniel Boone.

The celebration July 27 and 28 is to highlight the role Kentuckians played in the War of 1812. The long rifle and powder horn of William Whitley will be on display.

The house is about 10 miles south of Stanford.
