Follow-Up: How Will Cave Mill Construction Effect Drivers?

You may have seen markings on the corner of Smallhouse and Cave Mill Road. Those markings designate a future construction project that will make Smallhouse Road into one. A private developer building a new apartment complex will do all the work on the project.

"We have done some planning on the project ,but the actual construction will be taking place by a private developer," says Director of Public Works Jeff Lashlee.

Smallhouse Road as it sits now is two intersections. When work is complete Smallhouse Road will run behind the Church of the Latter Day Saints and make one intersection. The current traffic light at Smallhouse and Cave Mill, at Hunting Creek Estates, will move up the road to the new location. The developer has been working with the church on the project.

"They made arrangements with the people who occupy the Mormon building and in tying in as far as the condition of realigning that road through the development they are going to widen that intersection to," says Mayor Bruce Wilkerson.

As for traffic issues during construction, most work will be done off site building the new roadway. The public works department says the developer has a plan for when Cave Mill is widened and a turning lane is added.

"One will be use of detours. We do not see these being very extensive in time a lot of the work will take place off the main line now," says Lashlee.

The city understands this project is disturbing neighbors in the area but believes it is better for drivers.

"I believe that the majority of people in the southern part of the city and the county will find this a great project to move traffic along," says Mayor Wilkerson.

Construction on the road will begin in August and will take place through the end of the year.
