Time For Motorists To Be Alert For School Buses

Posted: 12:07 PM Aug 9, 2012

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- The summer is winding down, and that means buses are gearing up to return students to schools across Kentucky. State police say motorists must be mindful of buses and particularly cautious.

Kentucky had 1,627 school bus-related crashes last year, resulting in 506 injuries and five deaths. Trooper Michael Webb says drivers should watch for buses and be alert for loading or unloading vehicles.

Distracted drivers and people who speed in school zones are a danger. Webb warns against texting while driving or any activity that might divert attention from a bus's flashing lights.

State police say it's against the law to proceed from any direction when a bus is stopped with the stop arm and signal lights activated.

Troopers also encourage parents to review bus safety with their children.
