Indiana Mom Who Lost Legs in Tornado Gets 1st Prosthesis

Posted: 7:40 PM May 2, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Stephanie Decker of Sellersburg was fitted for an artificial right leg Wednesday in Louisville, and practiced standing, walking, and turning while using parallel bars for support.

She received the prosthesis two months to the day after a March 2 tornado demolished her family's former home in Henryville, Indiana, about 20 miles north of Louisville. She told The Courier-Journal "It's a good anniversary."

Her right leg was amputated below the knee and her left leg above the knee. Artificial limb specialist Matthew Hayden says Decker could be fitted for the other prosthesis in the coming weeks.
