Boone County Teachers Forgo Raises To Prevent Staff Cuts

BURLINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Teachers in Boone County have decided to forgo raises in order to keep 46 positions from being cut.
The tentative budget approved by the Boone County Schools Board of Education is $10 million short of what is needed.
Even with the teachers' sacrifice, the district plans to cut about 10 positions, including special needs staff.
The Kentucky Enquirer reports this is the second time in three years teachers have not asked for raises.
Rick Jones is president of the Boone County Education Association, the district's teachers' union. He said teachers aren't in it for the money; "They're here for the kids."
Board of Education Chairman Ken Cook called the teachers' actions "touching."
