A representative from the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) will travel to Bowing Green on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. to present Mayor Wilkerson with a $6,000 reimbursement check for the purchase of safety items.

Bowling Green applied and qualified for this safety grant for the purchase of Audiogram Testing as part of the City's Hearing Conservation Program and Riot Control Respirators for the Police Department. The grant is a 50% match of up to $6,000.

"We use every opportunity to make our City safer, said David Weisbrodt, Safety and Risk Manager for the City of Bowling Green.

The Hearing Conservation Program requires that all employees exposed to occupational noise undergo annual audiometric testing and be trained to understand the effects of noise on hearing, the purpose of hearing protection, and instructions of selection, fitting, use, and care of such devices. The City conducts this program in accordance with Kentucky Occupational Safety & Health requirements.

A portion of the Police Department's riot control full-face respirators are in need of replacement. Because the respirators are stored within the vehicle year round, the respirator lifespan is shortened. Many of the respirators are nearing 10 years old and are showing some signs of degradation. We will be replacing approximately 20 respirators.

Mayor Bruce Wilkerson said that in these uncertain times, grants such as this one are a practical way to make the City's budget go further, as well as provide products and training that will enhance public safety.
