Division of Water Wants to Test Private Well Water
Posted: 8:10 AM Jul 3, 2012 Reporter: Brandon Miles
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky residents who have private wells for drinking water are being asked to participate in a study that the state Division of Water is conducting.
The agency wants to determine whether domestic water wells are being affected by human-influenced pollution or events of nature. Owners of wells that are picked for the program will receive free testing.
The Division of Water says samples will be tested for E. coli and total coliform bacteria found in untreated human and animal wastes; iron-related bacteria; sulfate-reducing bacteria; and slime-forming bacteria. The tests will also look for caffeine.
If the tests find bacteria, owners will be advised on well disinfection procedures and other solutions.
