Hart County High Students are Hometown Heroes

Hart County High School students wanted to help the family of a classmate who was killed in a car accident, and they became Hometown Heroes.

Seventeen year-old Cody Avery was killed in March, and his unexpected death left his family under financial strain.

"You have your children and you expect to not to have to bury them," says Cody's mother Stacey Carroll.

Her son's classmate Everett Tweedy decided that he wanted to help, and came up with the idea to have a car and truck show to raise money for the family.

Gathering fellow friends and helpers such as Lindsey Allen, Jacob Hodges, Cody Jaggers, Nick Stephens, and Austin Grant, the group was able to put together the "Riding Low for Cody" benefit in only a matter of weeks.

There were 88 registered cars at the event, and nearly $3,500 was raised for Cody's family, which paid for the entire funeral and a headstone.

"It makes me feel really good because I know that we were able to help, and that what we did really did help them," said Lindsey Allen.

Jacob Hodges said, "Hart County is a small county, and when someone is down we all help to get them back up."

Principal Chris Mueller of Hart County High School believes this is "indicative" of the type of people they are and he couldn't be "more proud" of his students.

As for the event, Carroll says that Cody would have "loved it" and that she is incredibly thankful to everyone who has given her support.

For helping a family and friend in need, we honor the students of Hart County High School as Hometown Heroes.
