Send UK Cancer Center Receives $6 Million to Study Deadly Disease

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center is receiving more than $6 million to study a deadly disease that can be caused by exposure to chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

The center said Wednesday it is receiving a $5 million grant from the Edward P. Evans Foundation and a $1.25 million gift from an anonymous donor to research myelodysplastic (my-eh-loh-dis-PLAS'-tik) syndrome. The center says patients who have received treatment for solid tumors, particularly breast or prostate cancers, have a much higher chance of developing the disease.

The foundation was set up by a Virginia businessman and thoroughbred owner who died of the disease after undergoing radiation treatment.

The grant will fund five research labs -- three at UK, one at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and one at the University of Arkansas.
