Obama on Tax Cuts

Posted: 11:43 AM Jul 10, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is hitting the road to press Congress to extend tax cuts for low and middle income earners, trying to set up an election-year fight with Mitt Romney and Republicans over tax fairness.

Obama is making his tax pitch in Iowa, the state that launched his presidential bid in 2008 and will be heavily contested this fall.

Obama wants Congress to pass a one-year extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for households earning less than $250,000 before they expire at the end of the year. Romney wants to extend cuts for all earners, calling Obama's plan a "massive tax increase."

The president was meeting with an Iowa couple the White House says would benefit from his tax plan and holding a campaign event at a Cedar Rapids community college.
