Hot Rods Improve to 2-0

Bowling Green, KY – Tyler Goeddel’s three hits fueled the Bowling Green Hot Rods (2-0) to a 5-2 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks (0-2) on Friday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Just two games into his professional career, Goeddel also contributed with an RBI double. Starter Felipe Rivero was strong in his five frames, continuing the Hot Rods streak to start 2012 of not allowing an earned run. Cameron Seitzer added a two-run double and Ryan Brett also notched three hits.

Bowling Green once again struck first against their Eastern Division rivals, scoring in the bottom of the third for the second consecutive night. Jake Hager reached on a scoring error to begin the frame, which was immediately followed by an RBI-double by Hot Rods third baseman Goeddel. The double and RBI were firsts for Goeddel in his professional career.

After South Bend scored twice in the top of the fourth, the Hot Rods answered with two of their own in the bottom of the fifth frame. Goeddel and Drew Vettleson both reached on infield hits, then Seitzer hammered a ball to deep left field for a two-run double. The one-out two-bagger gave the Hot Rods the lead for good on Friday night.
Again in the need of some late-inning insurance, Bowling Green’s offense delivered. In the bottom of the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead, the Hot Rods struck for two more runs when Brett doubled home a run and Vettleson drove in his first Hot Rods RBI with a single. The pad was plenty for Charlie Cononie, who came on for the ninth and locked down his first career Hot Rods save and the win for his team.

The Hot Rods will attempt to sweep the Silver Hawks in this season-opening series Saturday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. Bowling Green’s RHP Parker Markel (0-0, 0.00) will hurl the game’s first pitch at 7:05 PM. South Bend will counter LHP John Pedrotty (0-0, 0.00).
