JONESBORO, Ark. — The Western Kentucky University baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Arkansas State in Sunday afternoon’s weekend finale at Kell Field at Tomlinson Stadium.
WKU (14-21, 6-9 Sun Belt Conference) rallied with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings but couldn’t overcome an early 4-0 lead by Arkansas State (21-16, 10-5). The Red Wolves added an insurance run in the eighth.
Hilltoppers starter Taylor Haydel (2-3) allowed five runs on 10 hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings.
ASU right-hander Brandon Farley (2-2) threw two shutout innings of relief, allowing a hit while striking out three. Junior John Koch picked up his eighth save of the season after working scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
The WKU offense scattered five hits on the afternoon with first baseman Kelby Chowning, catcher Devin Kelly and third baseman Casey Dykes each tallying a double. Dykes drove in a pair of runs with his fifth-inning double. Second baseman Scott Wilcox and Ryan Hutchison provided the other Hilltoppers hits while center fielder Jared Andreoli drew two walks.
The Red Wolves took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind an RBI double by first baseman Zach George and a run-scoring single by left fielder Logan Uxa.
Arkansas State added two more runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-0. An RBI single by George drove home the first run and second baseman Zach Maggio came in to score when George was caught in a run down between first and second.
An RBI groundout by Kelly put the Hilltoppers on the board in the top of the fourth, cutting the ASU advantage to 4-1.
Arkansas State pulled back in front 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI double by second baseman Zach Maggio.
The Hilltoppers cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run double Dykes. Chowning and left fielder David Simmons scored on the play.
The Red Wolves added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by center fielder Michael Faulkner.
WKU sophomore Austin Clay allowed two hits in two-thirds of an inning in relief of Haydel. Redshirt freshman Tate Glasscock gave up one run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 2-1/3 innings. Freshman left-hander Ian Tompkins recorded the final out of the eighth.
Red Wolves starting pitcher Cory Kyle allowed one unearned run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings.
The Hilltoppers wrap up a stretch of nine straight games on the road with a pair of back-to-back non-conference games in Nashville, Tenn. WKU takes on Belmont at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Lipscomb at 6 p.m. Wednesday before returning to Bowling Green for a three-game weekend series against Troy, April 20-22.
