South Bend, IN – Matt Rice and Ryan Brett both hit solo home runs, and Cameron Seitzer drove in a pair as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (15-11) took down the South Bend Silver Hawks (15-11) 9-3 on Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium.
With game time temperatures near eighty degrees for the first time this season, Bowling Green’s offense erupted for three runs in the sixth and ninth innings. Jason McEachern also contributed to the victory with two-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief in the first game of the three-game series.
South Bend struck first when they scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, but Matt Rice provided a lift to the Hot Rods offense with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning. The deep home run to left field was Rice’s second in a Hot Rods uniform and his first away from Bowling Green Ballpark this season. Coming in the seventh game on the trip, the long ball was also the first one hit by the Hot Rods on this nine-game road swing.
Bowling Green was able to take their first lead of the night when they struck for three runs in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a South Bend error. With one out, Todd Glaesmann reached on a misplay by Silver Hawk third baseman Matt Helm. The Hot Rods made South Bend pay for the miscue by hitting three consecutive doubles to left field. Cameron Seitzer drove in Glaesmann and Jeff Malm, who had just doubled, to put Bowling Green ahead for the first time 4-3. Then, Taylor Motter doubled down the line in left to score Seitzer, and the Hot Rods led 4-2.
The Silver Hawks added one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Hot Rods offense hit its stride in the later frames. The team took advantage of another Silver Hawk error in the seventh to score two more times. Ryan Brett then keyed another three run rally in the ninth when he hit a solo home run to left field, his second of the year. Bowling Green and South Bend are back in action for game two of the three-game set from Coveleski Stadium on Thursday night at 7:05 PM EDT.
The Hot Rods will send LHP Felipe Rivero (2-1, 0.68) to the mound against the Silver Hawks’ RHP Archie Bradley (3-1, 2.08).
