NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Belmont freshman left-hander Dan Ludwig threw eight shutout innings against the Western Kentucky University baseball team to lead the Bruins to a 7-0 victory Tuesday night at E.S. Rose Park.
WKU (14-22) was shutout for the third time this season despite outhitting the Bruins 9-4. Belmont (26-13) took an early 5-0 lead after the first two innings and never trailed in the game.
Ludwig (2-4) scattered seven hits and five strikeouts over eight innings. He did not issue a walk. Right-hander Jessie Snodgrass allowed two hits in a scoreless ninth inning.
Hilltoppers freshman Ian Tompkins (2-2) allowed five runs on one hit in 1-1/3 innings with six walks and one strikeout.
Junior center fielder Jared Andreoli and first baseman Ryan Huck each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Huck tallied a double as did third baseman Casey Dykes.
WKU left 12 runners on base, including seven in scoring position. The Hilltoppers left at least two runners on base in the first, fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth innings.
The Bruins took an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. The first three runs scored on a pair of wild pitches and a passed ball before second baseman Alec Diamond drew a walk with the bases-loaded to drive home the fourth run.
Belmont added a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Judah Akers to make the score 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins tacked on a pair of runs to extend their lead to 7-0. An RBI triple by center fielder Dylan Craig and a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Judah Akers accounted for the scoring.
WKU freshman Brennan Pearson worked 4-2/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts in relief of Tompkins. Junior Colton Satterlee retired six of the seven batters he faced over the final two innings, two via the strikeout.
The Hilltoppers return to Nashville on Wednesday to take on Lipscomb at 6 p.m. at Marsh Stadium. WKU then welcomes Troy to Bowling Green this weekend for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Nick Denes Field. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
