Fort Wayne, IN – Ryan Brett tied a franchise record with five hits, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (24-21) fell to the Fort Wayne TinCaps (21-24) 4-3 on Monday night at Parkview Field. Brett’s five singles tie Todd Glaesmann’s franchise record set just ten days ago in Lansing. Drew Vettleson also had two runs batted in, and Josh Sale doubled and drove in a run. The rubber-match loss drops the Hot Rods to just 1-6 in road series this season.
Bowling Green scored the game’s first two runs in the top of the first inning. Before an out was recorded, Drew Vettleson doubled down the line in right field to score Ryan Brett from first base. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and no outs, Josh Sale lifted a ball into left field for a sacrifice fly. The RBI was Sale’s sixteenth in 15 games with the Hot Rods.
The Hot Rods did not score again until the top of the sixth inning, seeing the TinCaps score four unanswered runs during that stretch. It was Vettleson again that provided a lift as he singled to right field with the bases loaded. The Bremerton, WA native’s 17 runs driven in on the season are good for third place on squad.
The story of the night, though, was Bowling Green’s inability to plate runners. The Hot Rods stranded a season-high 13 runners in the one-run contest, leaving the bases loaded on three separate occasions. The Hot Rods also finished the night 5-16 with runners in scoring position. Roberto Gomez took the loss for the Hot Rods despite only allowing two earned runs.
After an off day on Tuesday, the Hot Rods will begin a three-game series in Midland, MI, against the Great Lakes Loons (Future Dodgers) on Wednesday night at 6:05 PM CDT.
