Ag Commissioner Talks Crops in Bowling Green

It's been a tough year for crops in Kentucky in our area.

"The corn crop in western Kentucky is a disaster. 77 percent of the corn crop in Kentucky is rated poor or very poor," said KY Ag Commissioner Jamie Comer.

The numbers are staggering, and it's about to affect everyone in the marketplace.

"We're trying to prepare the consumers for what's about to happen. The price of what they buy at the grocery store is going to increase, and they'll start seeing the increases in probably within a month, and those increases will stretch throughout a full year," said Comer.

While the year hasn't been good on the crops, today was a bright spot for the future of farming.

It was the Kentucky Junior Livestock Expo in Bowling Green, where students from all over Kentucky got to come learn about livestock and farming.

Organizers say this event is just about helping the kids, regardless of what they want to be.

"We would think maybe part of the kids would end up being livestock farmers, being farmers some day, and doing it the right way, being great caretakers of the land, and great animal people. The simple fact is most of these kids, we're making good kids," said organizer, Warren Beeler.

For participant, Jessey Craig, it's his last expo, but showing animals is his passion.

"I love competing. I've been doing it my whole life. After this, we'll be going to the state fair, which is in August, and compete there," said Craig.

On Saturday, he'll get a chance to show off his market lambs as the expo continues. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
