E. Ky. Medical Center to Cut 148 Workers

ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) -- An eastern Kentucky medical center has cut 148 employees.

King's Daughters Medical Center also said on Thursday that it will close two centers on Sept. 1, one in Russell and the other in Pikeville. Workers at those centers will be moved to other facilities.

Hospital spokesman Tom Dearing said most of the cuts affected support, administrative and supervisory employees at the center's hospital in Ashland. In addition to the cuts, Dearing said some workers had their hours cut from full-time to part-time.

He said staffing levels for direct patient care weren't changed.

The medical center also laid off workers in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
