STANTON, Ky. (AP) -- The beauty of Red River Gorge ran into its dangers over the weekend for one hiker.

Rescuers from Powell and Wolfe counties say a rock climber's gear failed Saturday night in an area known as Pistol Ridge, sending the man falling 40 feet.

Crews got the hiker safely out of the area and took him to a hospital.

In order to get everyone safely out, the crews had to work their way along the cliff using ropes for safety and a basket to get the climber out.

Wolfe County Search and Rescue Squad worker John May say the hiker was using a temporary anchor in a crack in the rock and fell when the equipment broke loose.

The man's name was not released.
