LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A Kentucky medical team is preparing to reconstruct the face of a woman left disfigured by radiation to treat a cancer she never had.

The care led by a team from University of Louisville Physicians offers the 30-year-old a chance for a new life -- after years of hiding in the shadows of society in Kazakhstan.

Lessya Kotelevskaya lost her business, her home and her husband after being diagnosed with jaw cancer at age 19. It took years to find out the diagnosis was wrong.

Radiation treatments created a hole on her right cheek. She's living with her cousin in Louisville and preparing for surgeries.

Her lead surgeon said Tuesday the goal is to reconstruct her jawbone so she can eat and talk and live without stigma.
