Middlesboro Officer Fatally Shoots Robbery Suspect

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (AP) -- Police in Middlesboro say a man who had robbed a convenience store was shot and fatally wounded by a police officer.

The fatality was 20-year-old Leamond Ward. Police said Ward robbed the store Wednesday night, but some customers tried to stop him on the way out.

Middlesboro Police Chief Jeffrey Sharpe said when police arrived, Ward pulled a knife and came at an officer, ignoring commands to drop the knife. Sharpe said the officer fired twice, striking Ward, who died at Middleboro Appalachian Regional Hospital, which is across the street from the market.

The officer is on routine administrative leave. The officer's name wasn't released.
