FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- It's Campus Fire Safety Month in Kentucky, and state Fire Marshal Bill Swope says students should be proactive in addressing campus safety.
Swope says students should make sure smoke detectors are in working order, that their dorms have sprinklers and that they know two exits from their dorm, campus building or off-campus housing.
The Kentucky Division of Fire Prevention also gives these safety tips: Become familiar with policy on use of appliances, smoking and candles; determine what your response would be in a fire and practice it; don't disable or obstruct smoke alarms; don't play jokes with fire alarms; don't neglect fire alarm signals as false; remember alcohol use is associated with fire fatalities; and take personal responsibility for your own safety.
