Kentucky's suicide death rate is the 16th highest in the nation. In order to raise awareness about suicide prevention in our region, The Barren River Area Suicide Prevention Council was formed, by volunteers from different community agencies.
The council declares September 8, 2004 as Barren River Area Suicide Awareness Day in conjunction with National Suicide Awareness Week (September 5-11) and World Suicide Day, September 10, 2004.
A candlelight ceremony at the downtown Fountain Square Park is open to the public. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Kentuckians 15-34 years old. At the candlelight ceremony help will be available for anyone that is concerned for a family member or that wants to help themselves.
An average of 500 Kentuckians are lost to suicide each year. And Kentucky spends the 44th lowest amount of money on mental health in the nation.
