Soon the Aviation Heritage Park will have a new addition.
The F9F Panther, flown by WKU alum and war hero, Johnny Magda will soon be housed there.
"The Johnny Magda story will forever be told to the younger generations and hopefully be an inspiration to them," says Dan Cherry.
The legend of Magda's "F9F Panther" may be how it will get to the Aviation Heritage Park.
"As you can imagine, moving something like this three miles over public roads and highways is a real challenge."
The move requires a lot of planning and cooperation from local law enforcement and businesses that run lines from electrical poles.
The plane will be towed down Woodhurst Road onto Scottsville Road before taking a right on Three Springs Road to its eventual new home.
This isn't the first plane to ride down Scottsville Road.
Cherry's "F-4 Phantom" was moved about 3 years ago.
"I remember when we were moving the F-4 down Scottsville Road about midnight. People coming into Bowling Green off the Interstate did a couple of double takes. They're not accustomed to seeing an airplane on Scottsville Road," says Cherry.
Although that move went smoothly, Cherry says they had a BGMU bucket truck following behind just in case the plane was too tall.
"So just in case we mis-measured the overhead line, the bucket truck will be able to temporarily raise the line just enough to get the airplane underneath."
But Cherry is confident Magda's plane will be just fine when it goes on it's midnight ride.
"The 'F9F Panther' is a bit smaller than the 'F-4 Phantom'. It does not have an engine in it so it only weighs about 6000 lbs. So it'll be fairly easy to tow, but more importantly, the outside dimensions of the plan are not so big."
If you're a night-owl, you may see the plane being moved.
The Panther is expected to head to Aviation Heritage Park on Sunday, October 10th at 11:30 that night.
