Bowling Green's Downtown Redevelopment Authority reacted strongly today to comments made last night by the attorney for Lifeskills Inc.

At a City Commission meeting Tuesday night, David Broderick told commissioners that the opposition by groups (like the DRA) who oppose Lifeskills' relocation to the 500 block of State St. "could be construed as a thinly veiled discriminatory act against the mentally ill."

Lifeskills Inc. is a non-profit company that serves the mentally and socially disabled in South Central Kentucky. It entered into a land swap contract with the city in June to build a new 40,000 sq. ft. headquarters building downtown, but the DRA and Downtown Merchants Association oppose the move, saying it goes against the Downtown Revitalization Master Plan.

Reached for comment this afternoon, the DRA Executive Director Cheryl Blaine said "Lifeskills continues and Mr. Broderick continues to confuse the issue. The issue is not about the necessity of Lifeskills, it's a wonderful organization and we're very fortunate to have it here in Bowling Green. It's about the placement."

Mr. Broderick could not be reached for further comment.
