Chamber Opposes Correctional Facility Location

The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce goes on record against a correctional facility locating in the LifeSkills building.

The LifeSkills building is in the process of being sold to Keeton Corrections, an agency that will operate an approximately 40-bed facility for state prisoners who are serving the last of their sentences.

Prisoners would be allowed off grounds during the day to work, but would be in lock-down at night.

The chamber's board of directors voted on Oct. 19 to oppose the sale.

They say the facility would threaten the quality of life that exists in downtown Bowling Green and could pose a threat to residents safety.

The board is especially concerned over reports that inmates housed at Keeton's Paducah facility have left the location and not returned.

There is a work release program in our regional jail here in BG. Inmates in this program get released to work and then locked down at night. These inmates are released under supervision and if they do not return, they are taken out of the program once quickly apprehended, and additional charges usually resulting in more years on their sentence is imposed. They are no more a danger to the community than the work release inamtes from our own jail.Plus if you think about the location thing, our jail is only a block away from the senior apartments built out of the old Bowling Green Junior High gym. So, what's the difference?

I do not think that this should be something tht should be allowed. There is an adult daycare that in in that area and with the prisoners being out during the day anything could happen. I realize that anything could happen regardless but this is just something that is not helping the manner!

I really hope that they do not build this facility. My sister has been going to the Adult daycare near there and if there is going to be inmates right up the road from her, i will not feel comfortable with her staying there.
