Danville Murder Trial Delayed

The murder trial of an 82-year-old man in Danville has been delayed until at least next week with the defendant confined to a hospital.

Jack Caldwell Senior is accused of fatally shooting his next-door neighbor, retired educator Jim Trachsel, as the victim mowed his lawn in 2004.

Caldwell has appeared in the courtroom in a wheelchair and using an oxygen mask through presentation of the prosecution's case.

He was taken to the hospital Monday after medical personnel said his blood oxygen level had dropped.

Testimony was to resume Nov. 29, but won't begin any earlier than next week because of Caldwell's hospitalization.

The state says the shooting sprang from a long-running property line dispute.

The defense says it was self-defense shooting.

If convicted, Caldwell could face up to 20 years in prision.
