Massachusetts Debating Making Spanking Children Illegal

What if spanking your kids made you a criminal? Some people think that's a good idea.

In Massachusetts, they've proposed a law saying corporal punishment of children at home is child abuse.

Kathleen Wolf wants it to be illegal in the state of Massachusetts for parents or other adults to spank children.

A number of Massachusetts state lawmakers say the proposed bill is unnecessary and unenforceable.

A hearing was held Nov. 28 before a legislative committee.

"Perhaps this bill could address corporal punishment as our ideal in Massachusetts, so that we can start to educate around it, but also specify that official intervention around corporal punishment would occur only when there is a concern of excessive loss of control, violence, or infliction of pain," said Kathleen Wolf, author of the proposed ban.

The formal legislative session has already ended for 2007, so the bill won't be up for debate at least until 2008.
