A severely injured Woodburn soldier succumbs to his wounds on New Year's Eve.

Specialist Brian Gorham's Humvee was on patrol in Afghanistan when it rolled over a bomb, burning Gorham over half of his body.

According to Gorham's neighbor Frances McKinney, early on Dec. 31, Gorham's heart stopped for nearly five minutes before doctors were able to revive him.

Doctors at the San Antonio Hospital where he was being treated, also found a blood clot that required surgery.

However, the 21-year-old had lost several pints of blood during the day from failed skin grafts.

According to Gorham's cousin, Joyce Hardcastle, doctors feared that with so much blood loss they might not be able to perform surgery to remove the clot.

Specialist Gorham passed away Monday evening.

Funeral arrangements for Gorham are incomplete.
