The 2002 Vote: Candidate Profile

Mike Buchanon (R)- Incumbent

  • Wife, 2 Sons
  • Warren Co. Judge Executive Since 1994
  • Strong Supporter of Transpark

    Harold Brantley (D)- Challenger

  • Wife, 3 Children
  • Served 8 Years on W.C. Fiscal Court (3rd District Magistrate)
  • Strong Opponent of Transpark

Although the proposed Kentucky TriModal Transpark has been the dominant issue, there's more to these two candidates than their stance on this particular issue.

Mike Buchannon compares the office of Judge Executive to running a successful business, something he says he's been able to do. As president and owner of Deemer's Florist and a number of area developments like Fairview Plaza, Buchanon believes the 93,000 Warren County citizens act as his boss. He refers to them as individual shareholders and customers. Seeking his third term, Buchanon says he's been able to cut tax rates, while increases the services the county provides.

Buchanon says under his administration residents have seen a record number of new jobs, the expansion of the parks system, better roads, better police and fire protection and much more.

Harold Brantley and Mike Buchanon disagree on many issues, but they do agree on one thing, running the county is much like running a business.

As former president of the BG/WC Chamber of Commerce, Brantley says he knows how successful businesses operate. He also believes that his background managing a variety of businesses makes him uniquely qualified. In addition to owning and operating Brantely Apprasial Company since 1968, he also owns a financial company, rental property and raises beef cattle.

Brantley contends his desire to be county judge is at a much greater level. Besides addressing economic development, he promises to tackle the county's infrastructure. He hopes to improve sewer lines and other county provided services.
