Family and friends gathered Tuesday to bury a 24-year-old Louisville native killed in Iraq.

Saint Barnabus Church Pastor Father Wayne Jenkins remembered Marine Sergeant David Wimberg as a docile person who loved his family and friends.

Wimberg died last week during combat operations in Hadithah, Iraq. Family spokesman Charlie Zimmerman says Wimberg was shot in the armpit during door to door fighting in the search for insurgents.

Wimberg's brother, Michael, read a poem during the funeral Mass at the Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Louisville. Afterward, Michael Wimberg described his brother as someone who joined the Marines for the adventure and to help others.

About 500 people, including Wimberg's parents and three siblings, attended the funeral.

Wimberg's burial was to take place Tuesday afternoon in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville.
