Dr Craig Beard says: "We call it Ci. Ci system and basically it is a computer assisted system that allows us to see the patient’s anatomy 3-dimensionally."

The Ci system at the Medical Center is the first of it's kind in the state of Kentucky. The surgeon uses a special wand to pinpoint areas of the knee that should be cut for the replacement. A monitor shows the doctor how many millimeters to cut and what degree and angle should be used.

Dr. Beard says: "It allows us to hopefully make more accurate cuts when we actually section the bone doing joint replacement."

Dr. Beard says there are many benefits to using the Ci system.

Dr.Beard says: "By using Ci system it allows us to get away from having to drill holes in the bone. By getting away from the drilling of the holes, we have less blood loss."

He says it also is less painful for patients and allows for a smaller incision. With society aging many people want to remain active and knee replacement is becoming more common.

Dr. Beard says: "Very common. In fact in the past few years because knee replacements have become so successful the procedure has become so commonplace people expect more active lifestyle this day and time. They want to get out they want to be able to walk."

Doctor Beard says they have performed nine cases of the Ci Surgery in our area and are very pleased with the results. He says there are some other areas experimenting with the computer-assisted surgery for hip replacement, but that technology is not being released just yet.
