Bowling Green's City Commission officially approved a new budget at a special meeting this afternoon.

The $84 million spending plan will include funding for new police officers and firefighters.

As well as a host of municipal projects like a skatepark and a dog park.

The budget will go into effect on Friday, the same day a controversial change to city employees' health insurance goes into effect.

The city's self-funded plan will no longer cover accidents that are a result of what it deems "hazardous hobbies."

That list includes skydiving, bungee-jumping and auto racing.

The city's human resources director says this is just one of more than 70 exemptions included in the plan.

"It's probably the first change that our employees would see as something that would decrease our coverage. We actually have made 9 changes since we became self-funded, all of those were to enrich our land," said Michele Tolbert.

Tolbert says she has only heard 2 complaints from city employees.

The city has not ruled out more cost-saving changes to its plan over the next fiscal year.
