An investigation continues into the cause of a fire that gutted Lake Malone Inn early Sunday morning.
Firefighters arrived to find the vacant hotel and restaurant engulfed in flames. The well-known hotel is located in the community of Dunmor in Muhlenberg County.
Fire officials believe the fire started in the front of the building, but say it will take some time to determine the cause.
While fire investigators continue to sift through the ashes, residents of this small community say they’re heartbroken after one of its landmarks went up in flames.
Residents like Jeff Morris, who lives across the street from the hotel watched hopelessly as a piece of their history turned to ashes.
"When it started, it went!”
Firefighters say the hotel was made of wood and thanks to the dry conditions; it only added fuel to the fire.
As you can imagine, the burning of this well-known hotel came as a shock to many in the community.
"It’s a shame, it's a shame to the end of the county, it was a wonderful place at one time," Dunmor resident, Ronnie Higgins said.
The fire removed hope that some residents had of people occupying the hotel again.
Investigators are on the scene trying to determine the cause of the blaze and say their investigation is being slowed down thanks to the rain.
As for the hotel, it closed last September so nobody was in the building at the time of the fire.
Lake Malone Inn is owned by Don Everly. He’s the oldest of the Everly brothers of Rock n’ Roll Fame.
The inside of the hotel is said to have contained Everly brother’s memorabilia.
