A Glasgow woman is pleading with state officials to have her son transferred out of the state penitentiary in Eddyville.

Twenty-three-year-old Adam Wood is serving a 13-year sentence for the shooting death of his step-father, Philip Grinstead. Wood pleaded guilty, but mentally ill, last month to first-degree manslaughter.

Wood’s mother, Ruth Grinstead, says she thought Adam would serve out his sentence at Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in Oldham County. Instead, Grinstead says her son has been taken to Eddyville where she fears he won't get the type of care he needs.

The order entered in Barren Circuit Court last month does not list where Wood's sentence would be served. But Grinstead is still hoping state officials will help her get her son moved to a facility where he can be treated for his mental illness.

She says Adam was diagnosed with schizophrenia about six months before the shooting in 2003. But Grinstead claims his mental problems began shortly after he suffered a brain injury during a skateboarding accident when he was fourteen.
