WKU won't Build New Track at Kereiakes

Following much opposition from Bowling Green residents, Mayor Elaine Walker announced Friday that Kereiakes Park will no longer be considered as a possible location for Western's new track complex.

The controversy began a few weeks ago when WKU met with local leaders to discuss a partnership between the university, the city and the county to build a new track in a local park.

Western's L.T. Smith Stadium expansion project calls for a $1.5 million track and field facility, with room for an eight lane track, 1,000 seat bleachers and room for parking. But once word got out that a contractor suggested Kereiakes Park, residents were up in arms.

At a public meeting Monday night, Mayor Walker promised that wouldn't happen. A commission has now been formed to look into other possible locations around town. The group will meet again in a couple of weeks to discuss them with the public.
