Reports of mysterious lights and booms poured into police departments in Indiana late on April 16.

More than 140 calls came into the 911 system about lights in the sky, crashes and vibrations on the ground.

The calls began just after 10:30 p.m.

Callers were concerned the object might have been a plane crashing, a meteorite or some unidentified object.

Many said the light display was followed by an explosion that shook their homes.

A slight metallic smell was reported shortly after the incident.

"And I heard the bomb at that point in time, it kind of woke me up," said witness Jack Hughes.

"So, it was louder than anything I heard before like you would think from a sonic boom from a jet or something like that. But this was big."

Indiana State Police and local sheriff's departments dispatched at least 50 emergency responders to the scene.

Authorities say their best guess was that it was a meteorite that fell from the sky.
