It's been 85 years since women first earned the right to vote in this country, but there are still places in society where women are just now beginning to break new ground.

Tonight Western played host to one such pioneer.

Wilma Mankiller is the first woman ever to be named chief of the Cherokee nation.

She spoke tonight to a packed house at WKU, encouraging students to become community leaders no matter what the barriers.

Chief Mankiller faced stiff resistance within the tribe when she first took office, but has earned the respect of her nation.
