If you've never seen Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital it's a lot like its own little city. Next to Federal Express, the Memphis hospital is one of the city's biggest employers.
Kenroy Register says: "St. Jude right now, currently employs 3200 people and is growing at a rapid pace."
And it's projected that number will climb as high as 11,700 in the next year. Register says almost everyone he knows works for the hospital.
Register says: "It's kind of like a high school reunion. I hadn't seen a lot of people from high school until I started working here. I was like where's everybody been? I guess they've been at St. Jude."
The hospital staff consists of nurses and doctors naturally, but the team is made up with many more integral parts.
Register says: "I guess the most important people that we see on a daily basis is the people that work in the cafeteria. They are definitely smiling friendly faces."
And that's not all. To operate a hospital like St. Jude janitorial staff must keep the place completely sanitized at all times. Even outside is immaculate.
Register says: "People that tend to the landscaping make it look very nice. It's almost like a miniature Disneyworld! It's the Disneyworld of hospitals!"
With such a huge number of staff the hospital is also a major contributor to the local economy.
Register says: "The economic contribution in 2004 from St. Jude was $646.9 million. And that's projected to be $5.78 billion in 2005."
