A carnival ride collapsed over the weekend at a county fair in California.

Investigators are looking into what caused the accident, which left about two dozen people hurt, mostly children.

With summer carnival season right around the corner, it's raising new questions about how safe these portable rides really are.

"I saw just complete chaos, children who were on the ride were entangled in the swings," recalled eyewitness Tricia Schlueter.

"I went backwards, my chair spun around, everyone was screaming and stuff," explained rider Brandon Schlueter.

"And then it threw us back on the ground and dragged us."

About two dozen people, mostly kids, were hurt when a swing ride, called the Yo-Yo, broke down.

"There were screams, there was crashes, there was pandemonium," stated police.

As a result of this accident and other recent accidents, there are now more questions being raised about safety at both local fairs where the rides travel from town to town, and also at theme parks and amusement parks where the rides are in a fixed location.

Kaitlyn Lasitter, who is 14-years-old, had her feet cut off in an accident at a Six Flags last June.

She was in Washington last week asking Congress for more safety oversight.

"That I'm alive and I fought and I'm here today, then now we're going to change and make it safer," said Lasitter.

The amusement park industry, which includes Disney, the corporate parent of ABC News, says it has an "outstanding safety record."

In a statement, the head of an industry group said "the safety of our guests is our top priority."

Fairly or unfairly, however, these recent accidents may have some guests thinking twice as summer vacation approaches.
