At 8 a.m. Thursday, the Tennessee Valley Authority set a winter peak record.

The power giant asked several large industries to cut production as part of an "emergency load curtailment plan."

The company is reducing consumption within its own facilities. Employees are turning off unnecessary lights and electrical equipment and turning down the thermostat.

TVA says doing so saves 60 megawatts of power, enough to serve nearly two thousand homes. If conditions worsen...the company could make a public appeal for curtailment.
