A nationwide shortage of immunizations is making an impact here in south central Kentucky. The Barren River Health Department has now been forced to prioritize who receives the vaccinations.
Vaccines that are scarce include Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Pneumococcal. Health Officials say infants and children are primarily being affected by the shortage. The Health Department sent out letters to all schools in their district explaining the situation.
The shortage started once two vaccine manufacturers quit producing immunizations. The Health Department expects the shortage by over by the end of the summer.
