Daniel Curry works at Kentucky Legal Aid, he tries to explain it in simple steps.
"Try to find the perfect match. The plan that is going to cover all or at least the most expensive drug the individual takes."
It sounds easy, but to many seniors, it's not.
"There are 17 companies offering a total of 42 plans."
And each one doesn't come without its' own hang up.
"Most expensive plan covers the widest range of drugs."
In Curry's 9 years of experience working with seniors he's noticed most get hung up on one thing.
Anyone who has Medicare qualifies for the Medicare Part D Plan. The catch is, only SOME Seniors qualify for extra help.
Billy Vincent from the Social Security Administration Office says it's simply a way that the Social Security Administration and Medicare will assist individuals with limited income and resources in paying for a plan.
Now, get out your pen and paper, here come the numbers.
If you have limited income and resources and you have Medicare, you qualify for the extra help program.
"For a single individual $6,000 and $10,000 are the numbers to keep in mind."
The Social Security Administration broke it down into two levels: partial and full.
"To get full help you have to meet the income limits and have less than $6,000 in liquid resources." Liquid assets don't count some things like your home and car. For a complete list of what liquid assets are go to www.ssa.gov
"To get partial help you have to meet income restrictions and have less than $10,000 in liquid assets."
For couples, the numbers to keep in mind are $9,000 and $20,000
"Same rules apply under $9,000 you get full help if you have under $20,000 you get partial help."
And remember, you won't know unless you try.
"Its better to get denied than know 2 years later you could have gotten the extra help but you never applied for it."

Experts say to log onto www.medicare.gov for help on making the most informed choice and to see if you qualify for the extra help program go to www.ssa.gov.
